Ecological footprints provide an account of the demand on and the supply of nature's biocapacity for human activities based on robust data.
The approach is promoted by the Global Footprint Network and is designed to measure human demand on natural capital, looking at the amount of natural resources needed to support a country or region as a whole.
This is a well-respected method of gauging humanity’s dependence on natural resources by providing a simple calculation about how much of the environment is needed to sustain a particular lifestyle based on consumption habits.
